Learning is a process of constructing meaning while knowledge is like “a tangle of spaghetti with no beginning, middle or end, but always shooting off in new directions”.

Thanks for a Great Year!

The end of the year is upon us. It went so quick! We were proud to see the growth of your children over the course of the school year.  Our Year End Show was a wonderful culminating activity to demonstrate all we have learned.

We would like to thank you all for a wonderful school year.  We wish all the best to our Peace & Unity class.  Have an amazing summer!

The Construction Zone

Throughout this year our class has always had building materials: blocks have been there all year, lego and trains had come and gone.  However, about a month ago we noticed that our class seemed ready to move beyond small-scale building.

The Book with No Pictures

This week Peace & Unity has been diving deeper into The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak.  We used this book to explore different types of stories and it soon became a class favourite.  Using the book as a jumping off point, we created our own version of the story during circle time this week.

A Musical Experience

Part of our Inquiry into Storytelling is inquiring into how stories makes us feel.  We have been making connections between different types of stories and how they make us feel.  We have also learned that we can tell stories through music and that many of our favourite songs tell a story: 5 Little Moneys, The Little Green Frog, Skinnamarink.  Last week Peace & Unity had a musical experience and discovered different ways that music can affect us.

Mindfulness

As we discussed at our Open House last week, Peace & Unity has begun a focus on Mindfulness in the classroom.  Our intern, Mr. Andreas, will be using this project as a focus of his education in the classroom.  With that in mind, we are turning over this week’s blog post to him.

Parent Visits

Two weeks ago we started our 3rd Unit of Inquiry: Tools. Usually when we talk about tools we think about hammers, saws, drills and the other tools we might use in woodworking, but in order to connect with out Central Idea: People uses Tools and Machines to help them with their work,  we wanted students to understand that tools are all around us. With that in mind we invited parents from our class community to visit the class and share the tools they use in their daily lives.
