This week was Book Week at Magic Years and Peace & Unity was very busy.
Magic Years recently held its first ever off-campus Art Exhibition at Waft Me, a local cafe/restaurant. Each class created one or more pieces of art around the theme “Movement and Change.” This theme fit very well with our 2nd Unit theme of Changing Materials and gave us the opportunity to use tools to help us with our work which is the Central Idea of our 3rd Unit: Tools.
In going further with our inquiry into how people use tools and machines to help them with their work, our class split into four groups, and each group took a mini field trip to a different location on campus. We visited the Nurse, the Office, the Kitchen, and the Farm.
We would like to thank everyone who attended our Term 2 Open House last Wednesday. For those that couldn’t attend, you can view the presentation slides below.
- If you have any questions or concerns feel free to email the team at firstname.lastname@example.org
As we move through our Cycle of Inquiry into tools, the students have gone further than simply investigating tools, they have started putting tools to use in the Garden.
Chinese New Year is a time for families to be together. Wherever they are, people come home to celebrate the festival with their families. The New Year’s Eve dinner is called Reunion Dinner, and is believed to be the most important meal of the year for the Chinese culture. To welcome the year of the Monkey, our after school students made wind socks of bright colors.
As part of our Tools unit, we have created some new centres. One of the most popular has been our Doctor’s Office.
Paper is a valuable resource, but it can be used for more than just writing on. Today’s class we would used paper to make one of my favorite book character – Piggie from Mo Welliams’ Elephant and Piggie series.
We started tuning into our unit on ‘Tools’ by reading the book ‘Who Uses This’ by Margaret Miller. This fun book is a great resource for expanding students’ understanding of the work people do and the tools they use.
Our third unit of inquiry in the IB PYP framework is Tools. Students will develop a deeper understanding of tools and research into how people use tools and machines to help them with their work.
You can find many different types of birds flying around the campus. Before class we tip-toed around to see what birds we could see. As we observed the birds we noticed how many of them were searching, but searching for what?
Food! Our creative kids guessed that the birds must be searching for food. Today’s class we would make bird feeders, to help attract birds and provide food for them at our playground.
Prior to our break, many students were getting ready to head off on their “winter” vacation. As many would be traveling, and most likely by airplane, this class we would build our own airplane. Before building, we discussed about who had traveled on an airplane and where they went. We each took turns sharing our experience and what we knew about airplanes.
Last week we conducted an experiment with plastic cups. Using the scientific method as our guide: we made Predictions, then conducted our Experiment, made Observations and then shared ideas to draw Conclusions and make Reflections.
